IGCSE Extended Paper 2 (0500)
There are 3 types of writing in Paper 2:
- Directed Writing
- Writer's Effect
- Summary and Short Notes
Directed Writing is for 20 marks.
Writer’s Effect is for 10 marks.
Summary and Short notes 20 marks.
You will have two hours to complete the examination.
What is writer's effect?
The purpose of writer's effect is to select words and phrases from specific paragraphs in a literary extract to explain their usage and the effect they have on the reader. Writer's effect denotes why the writer might have used certain phrases and how they enhance the text.
Since the question is worth ten marks, you have approximately 25 minutes to answer.
When solving a writer's effect, it is important to recognise and understand the range of vocabulary used and students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of the text.
It is important to keep in mind that the question 2 of paper 2 is always the same! It is always asking for words and phrases from descriptions which explain how the author has created effects.
